The order below is the usual shape. Every event runs a little differently, so the host explains the plan for that day at the start. Ask the host at any time: that is what the host is for.
You arrive. The host greets you and shows you where things are.
You join a table, or sit and watch first.
The host explains the game in about fifteen minutes.
You play. Your turn comes with options, and you can pass.
Break, quiet spot, or leave whenever you need to.
The host starts wrapping up about fifteen minutes before the end time.
You do not need to act, perform, or be funny
Roleplaying does not require acting. "My ranger asks for directions" is roleplaying. So is saying it as your ranger. Neither is better.
You can play a confident character while being yourself. Tell the host what your character wants and the host can handle the words.
Board game? You do not need to have read the rules. A card in front of you lists what your turn involves.
Your options for taking part
Every option is a complete way to play. None is a warm-up or a step towards "really" playing.
Our events run board game tables. A roleplaying table appears only when the plan for that event says so.
Board game table
Take your turn normally
Ask what your options are
Ask someone to read your cards
Play with your cards face up
Pass, and take your turn later
Roleplaying table (when there is one)
Speak as your character
Describe what your character does
Write it down and show the host
Point at an option
Ask for ideas
Pass
Either table
Stand up, walk about, or sit on the floor
Fidget
Look away while listening
Take a break
Just watch for a while
Nobody will comment on any of it. Watching is a real option.
More thinking time is always available. Say "one minute", or say nothing. The host will wait and will not fill the silence with another question.
If you want to stop, pause, or leave
No penalty, and no explanation needed.
Pause: say "pause" or tap the card in the middle of the table. The scene stops at once.
Skip: say "let's skip this" to move past a scene or a topic without discussing it.
Leave: take a break, go to a quiet spot, or go home. You are welcome back next time.
Change your mind: if you agreed to something and it does not work for you, say so.
The room
If you need a quieter spot, ask the host what is available on the day.
Music is quiet and can be lowered or turned off entirely on request.
Fidget toys are on the table.
Tell me what would help
Optional. You do not need to disclose a diagnosis or explain any personal history.
Message the host with what would help: a written list of what your turn involves, more thinking time, a seat near the exit, no background music, no direct invitations, or a topic to avoid. Or send one line: "here is what I need".
The host is the only person who reads it, and it is deleted after the event.
