Setup
- 1Lay. Lay fifteen Dixit cards in three lines of five. Everyone studies the same fifteen cards.
- 2Hand. Give each explorer a slate, pen, and lantern. Each lantern starts Light side up.
- 3Choose. Stack four word cards and pick a first scout. The first clue word waits in the pile.

Walkthrough: first round
Worked opening: the clue word is "Captain" beside fifteen Dixit cards. Ana crosses 3 boxes, Ben crosses 7 alone, so Ben flips Dark. Ana scouts a pirate ship shared with two others for a Spark (2 stars). Ben scouts a card nobody else picked, falls and keeps the stars already filled.
- 1Reveal. The first scout flips a word card and reads it aloud. Every explorer uses the same clue word.
- 2Associate. Each explorer secretly crosses one to ten boxes. All slates lock before any card is shown.
- 3Announce. Each explorer announces their count and places their lantern. A lone leader flips Dark and scouting starts clockwise.
- 4Scout. In turn, each scout points at one crossed card. Shared picks score stars and lone picks end your round.

Rules
- 1Associate. Secretly cross one to ten boxes, then pass your pen left. Your slate stays hidden until scouting starts.
- 2Announce. Announce your count and place your lantern token. A lone highest count flips Dark for this round.
- 3Spark. Scout a card at least one other explorer crossed. All involved explorers fill two stars, plus one bonus for pairs.
- 4Fall. Scout a card nobody else crossed to fall. You keep past stars but stop scouting this round.
- 5Score. Each filled star scores one point at round end. A fallen Dark explorer loses one star per shared pick.
- 6Reset. Replace one line of cards and pass the scout pawn. Reset lanterns to Light and erase all slates.
Examples
- Spark: Ana scouts a card two others crossed, so all three fill two stars.
- Fall and Super-Spark: Ben scouts a lone card and falls with past stars kept. Carla scouts a card only Dan crossed, so both fill two stars plus one bonus.
Common mistakes
- Scouting runs clockwise from the first scout, and counts only decide who goes Dark.
- A fallen explorer keeps past stars and stops scouting, but their crosses still help others.
- A fallen Dark explorer loses one star per shared pick, so cross fewer cards when unsure.
