Setup
- 1Hand. Each player takes four discs and one square base, colorful side up. Everyone holds three flowers and one skull.
- 2Choose. Pick a first player to start the round. Turn order runs clockwise from that player.
Walkthrough: first round
Worked opening: with 4 players, everyone at once places one disc face down. Anna starts, adds a second disc to her stack, Ben adds one too, then Carla bids 2. Dan passes, Anna passes, Ben passes, so Carla flips her own top flower first, then the top flower of Anna stack, and wins the first challenge point.
- 1Place. Everyone at once sets one disc face down on their base, no turns needed. Every stack starts with one hidden disc.
- 2Add. Starting with the first player, in turn each player either places a disc on top or starts a bid. Stacks grow until one player names a bid.
- 3Bid. In the bidding phase the only options are up the bid or pass, naming no more discs than are in play. Play passes around until only one bidder is left.
- 4Reveal. The challenger flips all of their own discs first, top disc at a time. Then they flip others in any order, always the top disc of a stack, until they reach the bid or hit a skull.
- 5Next. Everyone takes their discs back and pulls their base in front of them, challenger starts the next round if still in. Play repeats until someone wins twice or is the last player still holding discs.
Rules
- 1Place. Everyone at once sets one disc face down to start, no turns needed. Each stack shows one hidden disc.
- 2Build. Placing phase, starting with the first player: in turn stack a disc on top or start a bid instead. Anyone can bid early without placing a second disc.
- 3Bid. Bidding phase: up the bid higher than the last bid and no higher than discs in play, or pass by pushing your base and stack to the center. Bases pushed to the center stay flippable, and bidding ends with one challenger left.
- 4Reveal. The challenger flips all of their own stack first, one top disc at a time. Then they free-pick any bases in any order, always the top disc, and may take several from one base or hop between bases.
- 5Fail. A skull stops the challenge right away and costs the challenger one disc to the box. The skull owner picks unseen, own skull means discard in secret, last disc means out.
- 6Win. All flowers up to the bid wins the challenge and flips a base over. A win on an already-flipped base wins the game, as does being the last player still holding discs.
Examples
- Failed bid: Carla bids 4, flips her own two flowers, then flips Dan top disc and finds a skull, so the challenge fails, Dan takes one of Carla discs unseen to the box, and everyone takes their discs back.
- Costly fail: Ben fails a challenge while holding three discs, so he shuffles placed and held discs and the skull owner removes one unseen, leaving Ben with fewer discs.
Common mistakes
- The challenger must flip their entire own stack first, top to bottom, before touching any other player's stack.
- Only ever flip the topmost face-down disc of a stack, one disc at a time.
- Each new bid must be higher than the last bid and no higher than the discs in play, so an equal or lower bid counts as a pass.
- Passing means pushing your base and stack to the center, but your discs stay in play and the challenger can still flip them.
- A failed challenge costs the challenger one random unseen disc to the box, and losing your last disc knocks you out.
