Setup
- 1Ready. Shuffle the cards, deal 13 face down as the deck, and give each player an easel and marker. The group agrees who guesses the first word.
- 2Pile. Place the deck within easy reach with room beside it for scored cards. Won cards stack face up parallel to the deck and lost cards stack perpendicular to it.
Walkthrough: first round
Worked opening: the active player draws and picks word 3, "Guitar", without reading the rest. Three clue-givers secretly write "Music", "Strings", and "Music". "Music" appears twice so both copies erase while the guesser looks away. The guesser turns back, sees only "Strings", and scores 1 point.
- 1Draw. The guesser draws the top card unseen, stands it on the easel lip, and announces a number from 1 to 5. Everyone else reads the mystery word while the guesser looks away.
- 2Write. Each clue-giver secretly writes one single-word clue (names, numbers, acronyms, sounds, and compounds like merry-go-round all count as one word). All easels stay face down until everyone has written.
- 3Cancel. The guesser closes their eyes while clue-givers reveal together and hide every invalid clue plus every identical clue. Identical means exact match ignoring case, same family (Japan/Japanese), singular/plural (Horse/Horses), or misspelling (Rhythm/Rythem); invalid means the mystery word respelled or translated, its family (Princess for Prince), a made-up word, or a homophone.
- 4Guess. The guesser opens their eyes and gives exactly one answer or passes aloud. Correct cards stack face up parallel to the deck for 1 point; a pass moves only the active card to the perpendicular pile; a wrong guess adds the next deck card unseen to it too.
Rules
- 1Clue. Write exactly one word with no talking or showing. Names, numbers, acronyms, sounds, and compounds are valid; the mystery word respelled or translated, its family, made-up words, and homophones are banned.
- 2Cancel. Reveal clues together and erase all duplicates and banned clues. Only valid unique clues stay face up for the guess.
- 3Guess. The guesser gives exactly one answer or passes aloud. Correct cards stack parallel to the deck; a pass moves only the active card to the perpendicular pile; a wrong guess discards one extra deck card unseen as well.
- 4Rotate. Play 13 cards with the guesser role passing left; with 3-4 players each clue-giver writes two clues on two easels. Cards are the score, so no tokens change hands.
Examples
- Duplicate cancel: "Guitar" clues "Music", "Strings", and "Music" erase both copies of "Music".
- Family clash: mystery "Prince" with clue "Princess" is invalid and erased before the guess.
- Parts are not duplicates: mystery "Garden" with clues "Lawn", "Mower", and "Lawnmower" all survive by the official rules, so agree on any stricter house rule before play.
- Piles: correct "Guitar" goes face up parallel to the deck, a passed card goes perpendicular alone, and a miss adds the next deck card unseen to the perpendicular pile.
Common mistakes
- Identical clues both erase, even with different capital letters.
- Identical also covers same family, singular/plural, and misspellings, not only exact copies.
- Word family clues are invalid, including plurals and translations.
- Keep the guesser's eyes closed during the compare, and show only survivors.
- The guesser gets one answer only; a wrong guess discards an extra card, but a pass does not.
- There are no score tokens; correct cards stack parallel to the deck and misses stack perpendicular.
